This brass Zippo lighter features the USS Missouri and the Japanese surrender plaque.
It commemorates the moment in World War II, when on September 2, 1945, aboard the USS Missouri (BB-63) in Tokyo Bay, Japanese officials signed the Surrender of the Japanese forces, officially ending the war.
To mark this significant event, a brass plaque was installed on the deck of the USS Missouri at the exact location of the signing.
The plaque reads:
Over This Spot / On 2 September 1945 / The Instrument / Of Formal Surrender / Of Japan To The Allied Powers / Was Signed / Thus Bringing To A Close / The Second World War / The Ship At That Time / Was At Anchor / In Tokyo Bay.
Zippo produced commemorative lighters to honor this historic occasion.
These lighters typically feature an engraving of the USS Missouri on the front and a replica of the surrender plaque on the back.
